Possum Traps
Possums are a plague in many parts of the world, as they get into the trash, knock over the cans, steal foodstuffs, and eat the growing vegetables in vegetable gardens. Dealing with possums can often be difficult, as the creatures tend to be fairly crafty and wily. Trapping possums require laying traps in the correct places, and there are a number of Possum Traps that you can use to help reduce the pest of the possum in your home and property.
Possum Traps: Leg Hold and Lures
Lures are used to attract the possums close to the Possum Traps, and using the right lures will play an essential part in getting the possum in the correct place where the Possum Traps can actually catch it. Possums love sugar, and you will find that mixing sugar and flour and sprinkling it around your Possum Traps can be the best way to attract the possum. You can also mix in a bit of cinnamon, as the spice will entice the possum even more effectively. Never sprinkle the lure directly on the trap, as you will want to avoid the trap snapping shut on the possum's face or nose.
One of the most humane Possum Traps that you can find is a simple leg hold trap. There are traps that use non-serrated jaws to catch the possum, and there are other traps that simply hold the possum without hurting it. These traps are the best way to catch a possum without killing it, but you may find that these Possum Traps are only partially effective at helping you to get rid of the annoying pests.
If you want to use these humane Possum Traps to catch the possums, you will need to:
• Set the traps on flat ground, and avoid setting them any place where the possum will end up hanging.
• Remove any debris or items that could inadvertently cause the possum to get hurt as it struggles to escape.
• Check your Possum Traps every day, as letting the possum sit trapped for too long will often result in a dead possum.
Make sure that the trap is attached to a chain that will hold the possum securely.
Possum Traps: Live Capture
There are many live capture Possum Traps that will simply capture the possum and hold it. These often come in the form of cages, and are used with a lure to entice the possum to enter the cage. These are best if you don't want to harm the possum, as well as when there is a chance that you will catch your neighbor's pets. Let your Possum Traps sit outside for a few days, and be certain to set the trap near a possum track or possum feeding ground.
In order to ensure the effectiveness of these Possum Traps:
• Make sure the Possum Traps are fixed to the ground.
• Test the trigger to be certain it shuts the door correctly when the possum enters.
• Always place the trap facing the direction from which the possum will approach.
• Place the trap in a place where the possum can't climb onto it, as that will trigger the trap without catching the animal.
• Make sure that the lure is something that possums love, such as kiwis, carrots, or apples.
• Set the trip pin, and place the lure on the trigger.
• Check the trap daily.
Possum Traps: Kill Traps
If you prefer to eliminate the possum problem once and for all, there are a number of Possum Traps made to kill the possum. These traps are simple and effective, and they provide quick and painless death for the possum. Make certain that the trap is pegged solidly into the ground, or tied tightly to a tree if you are setting it up high.
Setting these kill traps need to be done correctly:
• Make sure your fingers stay away from the opening, as that can trigger the trap and break your fingers.
• Possum traps are best set during the early evening, and you should always use fruit as the bait rather than meat.
• Always be certain your pets are kept inside the house while the trap is set.
• Release the trap set every morning.
• Change the lure every couple of days.
